The rain had poured relentlessly throughout the early morning hours as we picked up our car and drove and hour to the Active Volcano of Kiluea on the Big Island of Hawaii. We felt toasty in our Toyota car with cups of hot tea and coffee sitting comfortably in cup holders. We were going to make this a great day no matter what!

And then the Sun came out; not all at once but slowly like a shy teenager approaching the high school dance floor for the first time. Soon the sunrays were poking through the clouds and lighting up the countryside as we made our way to the Volcano Park entrance.

Soon we were walking along the cliff edge overlooking the cracked and broken surface of the crater floor.

Today we were joined by a stalwart friend who bravely accompanied us on our day trip from Hilo to the southern most shore of the island. As a puff of steam rose just past the end of the valley she wondered aloud:

“Is It Really SAFE to Walk Across the Floor of a Volcano in Hawaii ?”

We looked at each other and laughed a bit too loudly. We did however feel safe as we watched 3 or 4 ant-sized people trekking across the broken floor of the crater below.

“Guess we’re going to find out” some said aloud. It might have been me.

With our camera bags firmly attached we started our day’s adventure.
